What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo occurs when pigment-producing cells die or stop functioning. Loss of skin color can affect any part of the body, including the mouth, hair, and eyes. It may be more noticeable in people with darker skin. Treatment may improve the appearance of the skin but doesn’t cure the disease.

Ayurveda View of  Vitiligo

In Ayurveda vitiligo is mentioned as “shvitraroga”. All Samhitas of Ayurveda have mentioned this disorder. This is of three types and not an infectious disease. Hereditary plays a crucial role in this problem. It was assumed to be due to toxins in the blood that are produced due to faulty dietary habits. Taking viruddhaaharai. e. incompatible food like fish and milk is the main cause behind building toxins in the body that disturb the pigment cells leading to vitiligo or white patches …

What is the cause of Vitiligo?

Many believe that Vitiligo can be caused by drinking milk shortly drinking after eating fish, sour foods like citrus fruits. In fact, many studies have shown that antioxidants such as folic acid, ascorbic acid, lipoic acid, and vitamin B12 increase the effectiveness of phototherapy to cure vitiligo.

Symptoms of Vitiligo

  • While loss of skin pigmentation is the primary symptom of vitiligo, people with vitiligo can also experience symptoms like eye inflammation (iritis) and hearing loss. These symptoms can occur because the same cells that give the skin its color, melanocytes, are also found in the inner ear and eyes.

  • Eye inflammation (iritis) – Some people with vitiligo experience inflammation in their irises or retinas. Symptoms of eye inflammation include redness, general discomfort, and light sensitivity. Iritis is treatable but can lead to long-term eye problems if not addressed.

  • Hearing loss – An estimated 12 to 38 percent of people with vitiligo have some degree of hearing loss. If you’re concerned about hearing loss, talk to your dermatologist about a referral to an audiologist (hearing specialist) familiar with vitiligo.
